Heart Surgery: What to Expect

We involve you and your loved ones in every step of your treatment. While each person’s surgery is different, here is a general idea of what you can expect when you come to St. Vincent for heart surgery:

  • Before surgery: To prepare you for your surgery, you’ll have a pre-op appointment with our specialists. You’ll be provided detailed information about your procedure, projected recovery time, and any post-procedure rehabilitation needs.
  • After surgery: The type of surgery you have and your overall health will determine the length of your hospital stay. This can range anywhere from 23 hours to six days. Some procedures will require recovery time in the intensive care unit. Before you go home, our team will provide you with a post-procedure education. We will also provide meticulous follow-up care, including regular check-ups to monitor your recovery.
